Crypto and Coffee Q&A with Gemini: Samantha Ferrara

Crypto and Coffee Q&A with Gemini: Samantha Ferrara

Welcome back to Crypto & Coffee with team Gemini! In this series we interview our incredible team, who have been on a mission to empower the individual through crypto. In this episode we interviewed our Director of Supplier Relations, Samantha Ferrara. Grab a cup of coffee (or tea!) and enjoy!

How long have you been at Gemini?

It’ll be two years in November.

What made you want to come work here?

I was drawn to Gemini because it was a technology start-up in a nascent industry with a strong vision. Prior to Gemini I had only ever worked at large global enterprises so I was looking for something different. At Gemini there was a real opportunity to build from scratch, solve unique business problems, and have a meaningful impact on the organization, and the industry.

What is the most exciting part of your job?

Negotiation has always been the most creative and rewarding aspect of my role. Every deal presents a unique situation to adapt to, especially within the world of crypto, which keeps things fresh and interesting. Generally speaking, people tend to be intimidated by negotiation, yet are curious about it at the same time. I’m actually working with the Learning and Development team to create a Negotiation training for our team this fall, which is exciting!

What advice would you give someone who's just starting their career?

There are four things that I’d advise to someone who’s just beginning their career:

  1. Experiment - Be creative and try out various roles before committing to one function in your career.
  2. Create Exposure - Make yourself known and volunteer your time for special projects.
  3. Acquire a Mentor - My mentor has been the most valuable asset of my career over the last 10 years.
  4. Explore - Travel the world as long as you can while you work to establish what you want out of a career and life.

What is something you learned from working in the crypto industry?

Crypto is the fastest moving, and most dynamic industry I’ve ever worked in. Things move, change, and pivot on a dime. In order to be successful you have to anticipate what will be coming next, look further down the road, and make smart decisions about where to place your bets.

What excites you the most about the future of crypto?

What excites me most is the promise of Crypto’s potential and knowing that we are still early to the game! Much like in the early days of the internet, no-one could have really predicted how impactful it would be on humanity today. I love innovation and I’m excited to see how crypto and blockchain evolves in the world and how it will assimilate into our daily lives.

What have you been doing to keep yourself entertained while you’re WFH?

I don’t know if it’s as much to stay “entertained” as it is to stay sane, but I’ve been spending time down by the water everyday and also spending a lot of time meditating. If anyone’s looking for an easy introduction, Deepak Chopra’s 21 Abundance Meditation is a great way to start.

What motivates you in this time period?

I would say, “Gratitude” has been the underlying current of motivation for me during this time. While 2020 has been an extenuating year of challenges, I feel very fortunate to have my career, my health, and my loved ones.

What is your proudest life moment?

I love bringing visions to reality so helping my cousin start her Non-Profit called Play Bold Org as her Creative Director is a proud life moment for me. In 2019 we built the first ever Play Bold Basketball Court in Eswatini, Africa for the underprivileged girls. Building that court was one of the most stressful and tumultuous trips of my life, but looking back at what we accomplished, and seeing videos of the girls playing on the court now is really just amazing! I designed Play Bold’s logo from scratch, so hand painting it onto the court was special for me.
