Gemini Exchange Infrastructure

From day one, the Gemini Low Latency Matching Engine has run on baremetal physical servers out of the Equinix NY5 data center in Secaucus, New Jersey. Customers can cross connect from their NY2/NY4/NY5 infrastructure the same way as their existing exchange connections, or use an approved extranet provider to access Gemini production Order Entry, Market Data, and Drop Copy sessions.

FIX API

Direct Connectivity

Utilize your existing FIX engine to connect to the Gemini exchange for free, with the only charges being to your connectivity provider. Please email trading@gemini.com to discuss connectivity options and for a list of connectivity providers.

Global Footprint

Access the Gemini exchange via direct cross-connects from NY2, NY4, NY5, or via trusted network services providers that can connect from cloud-based trading platforms, or any major data center facility globally.

No Rate Limits

Connecting via the FIX API avoids all rate limiting.

Sandbox Testing

Run in parallel

Test your API engine and algos against order books running production-based pricing with all core exchange functionality running in parallel.

Dedicated Test Environment

Implement FIX connections via the internet for testing API functionality before having to commit to a physical line. Allow developers to set up, configure, and test without requiring production accounts.

Rest and websocket API

Total Exchange Access

Complete access via the REST API to every component of the exchange (Continuous Order Book, Clearing, Withdrawals/Deposits, Subaccounting, etc.)

Track All Exchange Activity

Private websocket connections and webhooks to track all exchange activity.

Rate Limit Flexibility

Rate limiting exceptions available for institutions.

Experienced Support

Continuous Support From Start to Finish

Work with a dedicated support team from initial sandbox onboarding through production implementation and ongoing support thereafter. Our dedicated team provides assistance with all technical and connectivity questions and all support services are free of charge.

API Fees

Gemini is transparent about our trading fees and the calculation methodology so that you have the information you need to make the right decision for your business. See our API fee schedule here.

Maker/Taker Fee Model

If you place an order that is filled immediately, this order takes liquidity from the marketplace and you will be charged a taker fee. If you place a limit order that rests on the order book, your order adds liquidity to the marketplace and you will be charged a lower, maker fee.

Fee Rate

Your fee rate for every trading pair is determined by your gross trading volume in notional USD across all of Gemini’s continuous order books over a 30 calendar day trailing window. Your fee rate will be recalculated every day at midnight UTC (7pm EST / 8pm EDT) and applied to all orders going forward from that time.

Security

Gemini has operated with a security-first mentality from day one. Our digital asset security philosophy adheres to three principles: defending against external threats; protecting against human error; and guarding against misuse of insider access.

Digital Asset Security

The majority of digital assets are held in our offline, air-gapped cold storage system and only a small portion is held in our online hot wallet.

Hardware Security Modules

We use hardware security modules (HSMs) that have achieved a FIPS 140-2 Level 3 rating or higher. All HSMs are geographically distributed and stored in monitored, access-controlled facilities. All HSMs require the coordinated action of multiple employees to operate.

MultiSig

We use a multisignature digital signature scheme (multisig) to eliminate single points of failure and improve our resilience against the loss or compromise of any individual private key.

Account Security

Two-factor authentication, password encryption, rate-limiting, and address allow-listing are just a few of the ways Gemini works to ensure your account remains secure.

Two-factor Authentications

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) via Authy OneTouch and strong passwords are required for logging in to your account and making withdrawals.

Hardware Security Keys

Hardware Security Keys and WebAuthn support allow you to use hardware security keys to secure your account.

Address allow-listing

Address allow-listing allows you to block all cryptocurrency withdrawal activity for your account, or restrict cryptocurrency withdrawals to cryptocurrency addresses you allow-list.

Rate-Limiting

Rate-limiting is applied to certain account operations, such as your login attempts, in order to thwart brute force attacks.

IP Restrictions

IP Restrictions are available to ensure only certain IP ranges can gain access to your account.

Sub-Accounting

Sub-accounts allow institutions to segregate trading strategies, funds, end-customers, and more across multiple sub-accounts under the same master account. This functionality also allows for institutions to earn volume-based trading fee discounts as volume is aggregated across all sub-accounts.

Unlimited Sub-Accounts

Using either our website interface or API, a master account administrator can create an unlimited number of sub-accounts with only one set of login credentials. Users can be permissioned at the sub-account level for specific roles on specific sub-accounts or at the master account level for specific privileges across all sub-accounts.

Instant, Free, and Private Transfers

You can instantly transfer crypto or fiat currency between sub-accounts at no charge. Such transfers are internal book transfers or “off-chain” and therefore not broadcast to a given blockchain. As a result, they are instant, free, and private — they cannot be viewed by third parties. Gemini also offers the ability to instantly trade from your balances stored in Gemini Custody.

API Key Permissions at Every Level

API keys can be created and permissioned at either the master account level or sub-account level. Master account API keys can manage any sub-account and specific sub-account API keys may also be permissioned for specific roles. All of our existing REST API endpoints are available to master account API keys.

Trading Volume Fee Discounts

Gemini aggregates trading volume across sub-accounts when calculating an institution’s volumes, making it easier to earn volume-based trading fee discounts. In addition to the competitive fees on our continuous orders books, Gemini offers other liquidity access points such as Gemini Clearing.
