Gemini Adds Support for New Blockchain Network: XRP Ledger and its Native Token XRP

Exploring the XRP Ledger and XRP

The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is an open-source and decentralized blockchain powered by a global developer community including key contributors Ripple, the XRPL Commons, the XRPL Foundation, and XRPL Labs. XRP is XRPL’s native token, and is used for payments on the network.

The XRP Ledger was designed to be fundamentally different from , like . Instead, it uses a unique consensus protocol known as Proof-of-Association (PoA), which requires nodes to create their own lists of trusted nodes, on which they rely for achieving blockchain consensus. These lists of trusted validators are known as Unique Node Lists (UNLs). Nodes can also use default UNLs recommended as trustworthy by the XRPL Foundation, Ripple, and Coil.

Ripple, which uses XRP to power its crypto solutions business, has the stated aim of increasing the speed and reducing the cost of cross-border transactions and remittances, with XRP serving as a bridge currency for financial institutions exchanging value between multiple fiat currencies.
