SWIFT Environment FAQ
SWIFT Environment uses adaptive testing and learner input to create
individualized course paths, allowing learners to concentrate on content
most relevant to their learning needs.

Answers:
- What exactly is the SWIFT Environment?
Based on an award-winning design, the SWIFT (SoftWare Intelligent Freeform Training)Environment consists of an Adaptive Learning Environment (ALE) and
an Adaptive Testing Engine (ATE) that are modeled after a one-on-one,
learner-controlled tutoring methodology.
So what does that mean? From your (as the learner) perspective, it
means that the SWIFT Environment will adapt the course to your personal
goals and skillset.
How does it do that? When you are prompted to select a goal or goals
SWIFT adapts the content based on that selection. If the course you
are taking includes pretests, SWIFT will then prompt you to complete
a pretest. SWIFT will test you until it determines what you know and
what you do not know. Once that is determined, the test stops and SWIFT
adapts the content accordingly. The result is a course made just for
you.
- How do I rejoin a course that I have partially
completed?
Select the course title from the course list to continue from where
you left off.
To restart the course from the beginning, simply click on the orange
arrow to the left of the title and select the restart link.
- Why do some learners see the Seven SWIFT
Steps when they first log in?
The Seven SWIFT Steps is presented by default the first time you log
in. You can view the Seven SWIFT Steps at anytime by selecting "Welcome
to SWIFT" from the My SWIFT tab.
- Can I change the way the navigation functions?
Preferences, under My SWIFT, can be changed to alter the way the Forward
button functions. It can be set to skip over certain types of instruction
and questions.
- How does testing work in the SWIFT Environment?
You may be tested at three different stages in a SWIFT course:
- before each module - used to adapt the content presented during
the module
- after each module
- at the end of the course
Whether tests appear is dependent on the course and its authors.
Testing is optional. You have the choice to skip taking a test.
You can review a test at anytime in the SWIFT Environment by selecting
the test from the Module or Course achievements windows.
The default test type is "adaptive," i.e., the test adapts as you
answer each question. Adaptive tests accurately predict your knowledge
of the material and will normally shorten the time it takes you to
complete the test.
Tests can also be fixed length. During a fixed length test, all questions
in the test are presented.
- My course always restarts from the beginning.
I thought GeMS SWIFT was supposed to keep track of my current location.
Your course is in demo mode. In demo mode no learner files are saved.
For SWIFT to keep track of your location you must purchase a registered
course.

- Can I take a test more then once?
That depends. The author of your course sets the number of times
a test can be taken, so you may or may not be able to take tests in
your course more than once.
Check the module and course achievements to see how many posttests
are still available.
- Can I review my tests?
Usually. Once you complete an adaptive pretest or posttest, a test
review button is presented. You can also review your adaptive tests
at any time by selecting achievements (either module or course) and
selecting the test review button from this window.
However, if the test you are taking is fixed length, the author of
the test may restrict your ability to review. If they have (and this
is not usually the case), the test review buttons will not work.
- Can I jump to different topics or just navigate
forward and backward?
There are several ways to navigate through SWIFT courses. The course
map allows you to navigate to any topic directly. When you navigate
this way a My Path button lights up. The My Path button will take you
back to your recommended course path. The course map also indicates
what you have completed as you progress through the course.
The other possible navigation is within the content window where you
may be prompted to click a next button.
- What is the function of the course map?
In addition to providing a visual representation of your adapted course
and of the entire course, the course map allows you to navigate to
any topic directly. When you navigate using the course map the My Path
button lights up. The My Path button will take you back to your recommended
course path. The course map also indicates what you have completed
as you progress through the course.
Information about the symbols found in the course map can be found
in the course map legend. To open the course map legend, from the My
Course tab select the course map legend button to the right of the
text box that contains either "adapted course" or "entire course."
- I tried to log into my course and received
a message telling me "Access denied." What should I do?
Double check your username and password to be sure you typed them
correctly. They are case-sensitive. You may also click on Retrieve
to have your username and password emailed to you.
- I am trying to access a course that my
colleague is currently viewing. I receive a message telling me that
course is unavailable. Why?
The course is registered as a demo course and may be used by only
one person at a time.
