Dr.
Marlene Jones
Project Manager
Marlene was a Senior Scientist in the Alberta Research
Council's (ARC) Advanced Computing and Engineering
Department. She was the Program Leader for the Advanced
Media and Learning Technologies Group. Marlene has more
than a decade of experience in applied research in the
field of Adaptive Learning Environments and is
internationally recognized as an expert in the field. She
has extensive experience in the management of high-risk
projects such as R&D endeavors. She was the Project
Manager for the ARC/Gemini Large Joint Research Venture.
Marlene was co-director of the first NATO Advanced Study
Institute in the area of educational technology, which was
held in Canada in July 1990. She was a member of the
Federal Government's Sectoral Advisory Group on
International Trade: Telecommunications and Computer
Services (September 1991 - September 1994). Prior to
joining the ARC in January 1987, Marlene was a tenured
Associate Professor at the University of Waterloo. Her
qualifications include a M.Sc. and Ph.D. Computer Science
from the University of Toronto and a M.Ed. Education of
Exceptional Children from the University of Saskatchewan.
Carl
Gutwin
Technical Leader
Carl has extensive experience in the development of
ALEs, with a M.Sc. computer science. He brought a
background in AI in Education as well as several years of
R&D experience focused on the development of
instructional systems. Carl was a Sr. Programmer for the
first SWIFT release and a contributing author of the award
winning paper entitled, "Brings ITS to the Marketplace... "
Elliot
Kimber, Sr.
Consultant, ISOGEN Corp.
Elliot has over 10 years of experience designing and
building industrial-strength publishing systems based on
the principles of generic markup and information re-use. He
has developed systems for customers in a variety of
industries including: IBM, Intel, Tandem Computers,
Ameritech, International Correspondence Schools (ICS), and
Cisco Systems. He was involved in the original SGML
Document Type Definition (DTD) built into earlier versions
of SWIFT.
Carla
Corkern
Technical Consultant
Carla was President of ISOGEN Corp. before taking a
Senior Vice President position with DataChannel. She has
designed and managed the development of Online Technical
Documentation Systems for customers in the
Telecommunications Industry, the Air Transport Industry,
the Defense Industry, and the Publishing Industry. Carla
was involved in the original SGML Document Type Definition
(DTD) built into earlier versions of SWIFT.
Dr. Phil
Winne
Expert Consultant
Phil is a Professor at Simon Fraser University. Phil is
one of Canada's leading educational psychologists with
expertise in motivation and feedback theory, and is
internationally known for research in these areas. He has
recently turned his attention to the design of ALEs. He
provided his consulting expertise to the original SWIFT
project specifically related to the adaptive learning
environment.
John
Moore
Expert Consultant
John holds a B.Sc., B.Ed., and a M.A. in Educational
Psychology specializing in "Instructional Design for Higher
Education." He has extensive experience in distance
education, educational technology, and instructional
design. John provided his expertise in the overall
development of the original SWIFT interface and multimedia
support requirements.
Dr. Tom
Keenan
Post-Secondary Interface Expert
Consultant
Tom was the leading consultant for the Post-Secondary
Interface Design Project for SWIFT. Tom is a Professor and
Dean in the Faculty of Continuing Education at the
University of Calgary. He holds an Ed.D. in Higher and
Adult Education, a M.A. in Higher and Adult Education, a
M.Sc. in Mathematical Methods and Operations Research and a
B.A. in Mathematics (Dean's Honour List).
Dr. Jim
Greer
ALE Expert Consultant
Jim is an associate professor of Computer Science at the
University of Saskatchewan. Jim is a leading researcher in
AI and Education, Intelligent Tutoring, Diagnosis, and
Student Modeling. He is one of the founders of the
Laboratory for Advanced Research in Intelligent Educational
Systems (ARIES) and a co-inventor of granularity-based
diagnosis, a method that was investigated as a potential
approach for SWIFT. He provided consulting advice to the
Gemini team related to the SWIFT Adaptive Learning
Environment.
Ruby Loo
Technical Leader
Ruby was Associate Research Officer in the
ARC's Advanced Computing and Engineering
department. In addition to a M.Math Computer Science, she
has ten years of technical experience in a variety of
computer science areas. She played an integral role in code
development and oversaw the technical team from 1995 to
1996.
Chris
Hughes
Secondary School Consultant
Chris brought practical teaching experience to the
project along with specialized skills in CBT development
and use. He has a B.Ed. and B.A. (honours) in psychology
and has done post graduate work at McMaster University and
the University of Calgary. Chris conducted extensive
usability studies in school environments with SWIFT and
provided valuable feedback and direction to the team based
on these findings.
Stuart
Williams
Technical Advisor
Stuart holds a B.Sc. in Physics, a B.Sc. in
Mathematics/Computer Science, and a M.S. in Computer
Science. He has several years of experience providing
technical training, project management, and programming
experience including extensive work in object-oriented
language design. Stuart provided valuable technical input
and feedback to the team and led the design for the
original SWIFT DTD written in SGML.
Terry
Yasui
Project Manager
Terry was responsible for the overall management of the
SWIFT project upon Marlene Jones' departure from 1995 to
1996.
Terry has over fifteen years experience in the design,
development and management of high-technology projects. He
has also acted as an applications specialist transferring
technological developments to utility companies, military
organizations, communication companies, resource companies,
transportation departments and other government agencies
for such companies as Hughes Aircraft, Coles Gilbert
Associates, Auto-Trol Technology, Intergraph, Harris
Corporation, and Computer Automation.
Dr.
Sherman Huang
ITS Expert
Sherman brought years of experience in research and
development of advanced learning systems, focusing on the
following areas: Adaptive Testing, Adaptive Learning
Environments, Artificial Intelligence and Education, user
Modeling and Knowledge Representation to the SWIFT project.
Sherman also provided his skills in object-oriented design
and programming.
